'e' is Italian and it means 'and'. So tranquillo e dolce means 'tranquil (ie. quiet, peaceful) AND sweet'. There you have it - it doesn't mean 'lively' at all, otherwise you'll see the word 'vivace'. So the last person, please check your Italian or at least musical terms before posting. 'brillante' means 'brilliant' in English. In musical terms, it would mean 'bright, somewhat louder, and with confidence'. If you do play the violin, you'll need to control the bow and be careful where to place it to give a 'bright' sound. That depends on the piece of music you're playing. I don't use an online music dictionary - I bought the Oxford paperback dictionary and it does its job well.
