8 + x - 3x3 = 6.1 1.9 + x - 3x3 = 0 So we may let f(x) = 1.9 + x - 3x3 and now we are going to find a root of f(x) = 0 Observe that: f(0) = 1.9 and f(1) = -0.1, we are sure that there must be a root between 0 and 1. Also f'(x) = 1 - 9x2 So applying Newton's law for iteration and starting with x0 = 1: x1 = x0 - f(x0)/f'(x0) = 0.9875 x2 = x1 - f(x1)/f'(x1) = 0.9873 x3 = x2 - f(x2)/f'(x2) = 0.9873 So corrrecting to 4 d.p. a root of the equation is x = 0.9873.
